Gary Robertson writes about Wayne Batty, who is retiring after having taught in VCU’s music department for 58 years:
Legend, cultural laureate, master teacher. At 85, L. Wayne Batty has just about exhausted the vocabulary of those searching for superlatives to describe him. He is the longest-serving faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University, and he’s Virginia’s longest-serving employee, according to state records.
Those two distinctions will end soon.
“I’m taking early retirement,” Batty said with a laugh.
He’s putting an exclamation mark on 58 years of teaching voice, conducting choral groups and singing the praises of opera in VCU’s department of music.
