The Republic reviewed

The Republic, at Allison and Broad, is in a building that used to house Cabo’s. In the 1990s the same location was called Benjamin’s. At one time before that it was 5th Avenue. Click here to read about its brief spell as the Bearded Brothers in 1969-70.

STYLE Weekly ran a review of the Republic in this week’s issue.

The Republic is the latest project from Rick Lyons (Bandito’s, Star-lite) and is in the former Cabo’s at Allison and West Broad streets. The interior features two bars, back to back, with a wall between them. Doors on either end separate the smoking and nonsmoking rooms and help somewhat to keep the smoke on one side. On the nonsmoking side, oversized lanterns punctuate the exposed brick wall facing the bar, and large, flat-screen TVs keep sports enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.

  1. Last Thursday, I was meeting several friends in the early evening (around 6:30PM). The entire non-smoking side was rented out for a group meeting. Thus the only possible place to sit was the smoking side. It was extremely hazy, smelly and disgusting with smoke. More smoke than I remember seeing in bars before the ban. We left after finding out that we had no options due to the group meeting(technically illegal) and went to Delux and had great food, drinks and no nasty smokers. The Republic hostess was also rude.
