The latest on the VAPAF saga/boondoggle

The long-running saga of Virginia Performing Arts Foundation’s zillion dollar performing arts center project has had more than its share of twists and turns. Yes, what was once sold as “inevitable,” a “done-deal,” turned out to be a bunch of adman spin, wrapped bluster that smeeled like manure.

Then came Mayor Doug Wilder to put the kibosh on the far-flung original done-deal. But, as it has turned out Wilder’s weighing in hasn’t exactly ended the spinning about what’s going on at the closed down Carpenter Center and the vacant lot on Broad Street, where Thalhimers used to be.

All the while Don Harrison at Save Richmond has been on the job, asking tough questions about the VAPAF’s rather mysterious boondoggle and pointing the way toward the truth. Click here to read Harrison’s latest piece on the topic, “Strike Up the Band.”

  1. Thanks for posting this. Citizens need to know. When the City government says it does not have enough money for things, this is the sort of project that is wasting it.

  2. Scott,

Seems to me the restaurants that have been paying that extra meal tax to help finance this (monkey) business have got a very legitimate gripe. Eventually, I won’t be surprised to see a group of them try to get some relief by taking the City to court.
