I discovered Chiocca's when I was in highschool at Thomas Jefferson in the late 50's. I had school friends that lived in the area and we would go in and split a Sailor Sandwich. I now live in Mathews County Va. and I have introduced a number of our friends here to the best sandwich's in Richmond and everone of them have loved the experience. I still come here often when we are in town.

Wow...I literally grew up in Mario's. We had Pop's 75th & 90th birthdays there. The Christmas Eve Open House was legendary. So many of the folks I went to St Benedict's ( The Langes, Karnes, Wilsons, Dana Rousey) with drank beers w/the ol' man there after 18 @ the Crossings. John Curley and his Sons John & Richard. Johnny Devito, Jack Kelly, Rummy Payne, Moose. I could go on, but I'd need a beer

Rebecca, I haven't had a chance to pick Dad's brain yet but will when I'm back from vacation. I haven't been to Vicenza yet (wish I had friends to stay with!) but have been to Lucca and other places Italian on trips with friends (tours.) I remember Chiocca's from visiting my grandmother's on Belmont every Sunday growing up as a child and teenager. That was back from the late 1940s on! I'll try to find out what I can for you. Pat

Pat, "Tootie" Coghill? I'm Mario's Grandaughter and would LOVE to hear about any history you might know. I've taken a 'once in a lifetime' trip to Vicenza to stay with some friends and am going to visit Lucca this week. I'm so excited I don't know where to start.

My dad's family lived a few doors away on Belmont. He and his friends used to stick the Pabst Blue Ribbon Stickers from their beers onto a wall plaque at Chiocca's. They called themselves The Aginzio (spelling?) Society for Cultural Advancement. He and I have both wondered it the "plaque" is still around somewhere.
He knew some of the family. He said that he was always made to feel special for having served his country in WWII and reading the history, I can see why.
Does anyone know what happened to that old plaque? Thanks
