it would be nice to have more sunlight in regards to govt. budgets, the drawback is that its hard to understand all the numbers to a layman, and budgets tend to be very long, boring.

I think the sunshine metaphor also applies to free speech issues. In my opinion "hate speech" should be allowed because I want these types of peope exposed to sunlight not hiding in the shadows. Its hard to fight a shadow, but in the sunlight you can combat things like racism and let racists expose themselves for what they are...fools.

Rabbit,

The story about cops-gone-wrong your link reveals is one I suspect is going to make a lot of people ask questions about. Why it sat around for nearly a year is just one of the baffling aspects of this case.

However, the failure of the mainstream media to notice this troubling case aside, I don't think this is all that unusual, in that cops in any town stick together. And, their bosses tend to let them cover up such mistakes.

Which, of course, is why there should be a reasonable amount of civilian oversight of how police departments are operated. After all, we sure can't count on our shriveling daily newspaper to be much of a watchdog, anymore.

Thanks Terry. I believe we can bring transparency to government whether or not elected officials embrace it. Don and other whistle-blowers have proven that information is power. I feel the same regardless of who sits in the Mayor's office: if they refuse to open up the doors, we will knock them down.

Whether it's city finances, public schools, <a href="http://chpn.net/news/2008/12/14/further-updates-on-the-shockoe-proposal/" rel="nofollow">project proposals</a>, <a href="http://rvarabbit.blogspot.com/2008/10/hail-as-in-big-icy-balls-to-chief.html" rel="nofollow">choosing a police chief</a>, our elected officials should be accountable for everything they do in office.

It's time for citizens to insist on accountability and transparency. The truth is a virus!

Excellent piece, Terry. If Jones seizes this opportunity, he would earn the respect of people like me almost instantly.

There's an effort to expand transparency at the state level -- my group is pushing for it in a big way in the next GA session.

I want that sunlight badly in RPS. Scratch the surface and up comes sewage and I'm not talking about the kids, teachers, or even parents -haven't had any problems there. I won't give specifics now but just a couple of suggestions: 1) Have parents fill out exit surveys when they choose to leave a school 2) Have the basic information from surveys made public just like the SOL scores - information such as "unqualified principal," "resource shortage," "safety concerns," "moved," etc. 3) Make public the number of teachers leaving a school and why -something simple again like "because of principal," "promotion," "moved," etc.

John,

The potential of "sunlight" as a populist issue is unlimited.

It's a concept that defies the old-think pols' view of issues that wants to cast everything in a left/right lines context.

"It won’t be long before ambitious candidates catch on to this movement toward openness."

You got that right...
