In Case You Missed It
- The Women’s Soccer team kept up their strong play with two crucial road wins at Lehigh (2-0 win) and at Bucknell, (3-0 win) two teams that are having strong 2009 campaigns. Shutouts have become a regular thing for the Rams who have now posted four straight shutouts and haven’t given up a goal in nearly 400 minutes. I actually think Mike Harris had a full set of hair the last time they gave up a goal. Senior Jasmine Riley (Arlington, Va.) has been the trendsetter on offense with two goals and two assists this past weekend for a total of five goals and five assists in just eight games this year.
- Kelly McQuade and her field hockey Rams continued their strong start to the year with a decisive 5-0 victory over the Hawks of Monmouth University. Junior Marle van Dessel of the famous van Dessel twins netted her second career hat trick and stellar freshman Kelsey Scherrer tallied two more goals to supply the offense.
- The volleyball team posted a 2-1 mark at the Maryland Invitational, with a big 3-1 victory over the Terrapins on Friday night. The freshmen duo of Kristen Boyd (Wilmington, N.C.) and Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech Republic) sparked the two victories, combining for 58 kills on the weekend.
- Tim O’Sullivan and the men’s soccer team had two games against local squads and started the week off with a 4-3 shootout victory over Richmond on Tuesday evening and battled Longwood to a 1-1 tie on Sunday evening. Sophomore Romario Blandon was the star of the week with a hat trick against the Spiders and an assist on VCU’s lone goal against the Lancers. One of Blandon’s goals against Richmond was a “bend it like Beckham” type shot that you had to see to believe.
- A very young women’s cross country squad (like no juniors or seniors young) had a strong weekend at the Winthrop Invitational, averaging a time of 20:04 for the 5k course. The best team average in nearly five years. Freshman Ariana Jones (Sterling, Va.) led the Rams and has yet to finish outside the top two for the Black & Gold.
