Spiders win it all

The University of Richmond football team has just won a national championship game. The Spiders’ fans have to be on cloud nine. The game (carried by ESPN2) the Spiders played against Montana was impressive: Richmond 24, Montana 7.

No, it’s not THE national collegiate championship. Richmond supposedly plays at a notch below the major college programs, such as the University of Virgina and Virginia Tech. But if there was anything less-than about the enthusiastic performance Richmond’s players turned in, well, I don’t know what it would be.

Richmond’s rookie head coach, Mike London, is the real deal. Let’s hope the powers that be at UR will move quickly to secure his services for the next few years.

  1. Although they’d soon have to quit making those awesome “still undefeated” shirts, I really wish VCU would start a football program. I could get behind them much easier than wannabe-ivy-league UR. VCU *feels* much more like THE university of Richmond to me.

ps, there is no “supposedly” about it- UR would get humiliated by VT or even sad sad UVA; but still, great season, great win nonetheless.

  2. Wolf,

In these times, and what zillions it would cost to launch a new football program, VCU would need a super rich angel to donate the dough.
