Plans for abandoned Ukrop’s location

At Richmond BizSense Al Harris writes about the future of the abandoned grocery store building and lot at Harrison and Grace that VCU has recently acquired.

The empty grocery store and parking lot at Grace and Harrison streets could soon be converted into classrooms and library storage for VCU, according to the school’s facility manager.

It’s too late now, but I wonder if this parcel of land could have been a better place for VCU to build the massive recreational facility now under construction on the northern rim of Oregon Hill, facing Cary St.

Right across Broad St. from the Siegel Center, right across Harrison St. from the parking deck, it seems like it would have been a nice fit.

Remember when VCU told Oregon Hill, the city, and the state that there was no alternative to demolishing the historic stables and encroaching further into the neighborhood in order to build the massive student recreational center? Now they just happen to buy most of a city block less than a year later from starting the rec center construction?
