Monroe to return VCU degree?

Former Richmond Police Chief Rodney Monroe is weighing his options, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

In his remarks, Monroe said: “I will accept responsibility for moving us forward by exploring various options for removing elements of this back-and-forth debate.”

The Charlotte Observer reported that about 150 people attended the news conference, and roughly half were Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers there to support their new chief. The newspaper said Monroe’s voice quavered at times as he held back tears because of the show of support.

“He received a standing ovation,” McMillan said. “People are very, very pleased with the direction that the chief is taking the department and his commitment to the citizens.”

Apparently, it took a while for the story of Monroe’s bogus degree to get all the way down to Charlotte, North Carolina. So, he’s just getting around to addressing the issue. Click here to read the entire article.

  1. Well, it’s about flipping time!! What has Monroe been waiting for? His degree is worthless – everyone knows that. At my school we used to have a rule – if you couldn’t figure out the requirements for your degree, then you were too stupid to deserve it. Monroe is a grown man who should have known better than to happily take undeserved favors from his buddies. I guess the saying “better late than never” applies – but how unfortunate that so many had to be penalized and the rising reputation of VCU had to suffer because of the unnecessary delays and the unethical behavior that started this all over a year ago.

Thanks to JLARC and House Appropriations for finally lighting a fire under the ostrichs who would rather stick their heads in the sand, assuring each other that this will all blow over. Anyone with half a brain could have taken a read of the community – outside of the “ivory tower” and it’s insulated information to figure out that decisive and public action was required for an institution of the Commonweath.

VCU – do the right thing (better late than never) or those with the purse strings may just punish you where it will hurt the most – in the pocketbook. Take back the degree if Monroe doesn’t hand it over asap.
