Meeting set on VCU buying Ukrop’s location

Melissa Savenko has some interesting comments on VCU’s recent purchase of the Ukrop’s location bounded by Harrison, Ryland, Grace and Broad, across the street from the Siegel Center.

This purchase is apparently in violation of a written agreement between VCU and the Fan District Association (”FDA”), the West Avenue Improvement Association, and the Lower Fan District Association.  There will be a public meeting held on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the FDA offices located at 208 Strawberry Street, at which time VCU will present its plans for the property.

  1. Covered this story weeks ago, but now the FDA is involved so Richmond goes into tither.

Also, some Fan wag who sits on VCU’s “Community Advisory Board” condescendingly told me to ‘take more positive steps’ with VCU, so there’s this also:

And again, Oregon Hill does not hate VCU faculty and students (well at least most of the time), however the current administration and its shadowy Real Estate Foundation have a lot to answer for.

  2. Scott,

Flying almost under the radar, VCU’s real estate foundation has been around for some time. That doesn’t mean there’s something evil going on. It does mean there’s nothing new about VCU moving in mysterious ways, when it comes to property and its long-term plans.

The fact that the foundation is not a part of VCU, but then again, it is, has always bothered me. Some sunlight into this business would do us all some good.
