It’s official: The Richmond Flying Squirrels

The contest to name the new Richmond baseball team in the Eastern League has concluded. The Richmond Flying Squirrels will play their home-opener at the Diamond on April 15, 2010.

And, the stunt has worked. The whole town has been talking about the list of six possible nicknames for the baseball team that has moved to here from Norwich, Connecticut, formerly known as the Defenders. The RT-D’s John O’Connor has the story:

Flying Squirrels was announced this afternoon as the nickname for the new Richmond Double-A baseball franchise.

Also under consideration as finalists were Rhinos, Flatheads, Flying Squirrels and Hush Puppies. The new team will begin playing at The Diamond next season and is affiliated with the San Francisco Giants.

Looking at the list above, and remembering that Hambones was also on the list at one time, it appears the new owners think their team is playing in Mayberry, not Richmond. I’m surprised that they didn’t have Hee-Haws or Hillbillies on their list.

Flying squirrels, indeed.

  1. What a stupid name for the team. No games for me, thanks.

  2. By the time we get to next spring, Richmond’s baseball fans will be happy to see games being played at The Diamond, again, even if the place isn’t state-of-the-art.

And, the nickname of the team won’t keep many of them away. I suspect most people who will boycott the Flying Squirrels’ games, because of the nickname, probably haven’t ever been to many baseball games. No matter what the team is called, they aren’t likely to attend the games.
