Much the way Garnett’s is the anti-Ipanema, the new 821 couldn’t be more of a contrast; it’s wide where it was narrow, bright where it was dark and open where it was tight. Fortunately, enough of the old remains to be reassuring. The Formica tables and unmatched chairs moved, as did the magazine rack. Sitting at the bar, you still have a great view of the kitchen and the menus are still plastic-coated. Whew! It’s different, but it’s the same.

Sally Bell’s Kitchen — with its salty corned beef sandwiches, flaky pecan-cheese wafers and onion-rich potato salad whipped with homemade mayonnaise — is expanding to a second location for the first time in its 86-year history. The bakery won a bid from the city to set up shop in the newly built, white-columned brick concession stand and pedal-boat operation known as the Landing at Fountain Lake in Byrd Park.

It’s a big step for the fabled hometown institution, which has been featured in The New York Times and GQ magazine but has stood pat in the 700 block of West Grace Street since it opened as Sarah Lee Kitchen in 1924.

Lamplighter is at 116 S. Addison St., in an area some are calling So-Fa — South of the Fan. What was a mechanic’s shop until a Cadillac blew up and sent shock waves all the way to Broad Street is now a scenester paradise. Coffee is fresh-roasted and brewed, and this place pulls true ristretto shots — refined espresso techniques that are much discussed by coffee geeks but still new to Richmond.

STYLE Weekly ran a review of the Republic in this week’s issue.

The Republic is the latest project from Rick Lyons (Bandito’s, Star-lite) and is in the former Cabo’s at Allison and West Broad streets. The interior features two bars, back to back, with a wall between them. Doors on either end separate the smoking and nonsmoking rooms and help somewhat to keep the smoke on one side. On the nonsmoking side, oversized lanterns punctuate the exposed brick wall facing the bar, and large, flat-screen TVs keep sports enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.
