Arts awards ceremony at Science Museum

The National Arts Program will open two exhibits in Richmond with a reception and awards ceremony on Sunday, June 28, at 7 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia. More than 500 people are expected to attend, and over $3,000 in prizes and awards will be announced. The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Office of Cultural Arts Programs has sponsored the program locally for 11 years in cooperation with the National Arts Program Foundation.  The Science Museum of Virginia and the James River Art League are also sponsors of this year’s events.

“After a decade, we are turning a new leaf. With an exhibit for youth at the Science Museum of Virginia, and an adult exhibit for amateur, intermediate, and professional level artists at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center, we are showcasing the talent of more than 400 area artists. This event is a must-see show, and I think this is the most diverse and largest group of artists that we have ever had to participate,” said City arts coordinator, Brian C. Little, Sr.

The June 28 opening night festivities begin at 7 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Science Museum, with a Summer Days theme reception and live music from the Goodwin High School Orchestra and American Youth Harps Ensemble. The awards ceremony follows at 8 p.m., and is followed by a VIP Artist Viewing Party at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center.

Both National Arts Program exhibits will be open to the public starting June 24. The public is invited to participate in the People’s Choice voting from June 24-26 at each exhibit site. For more information contact the City Art Program at 646-3674.
