April 27, 1974: Riot at City Stadium

On Saturday afternoon William & Mary and Richmond will play what will likely be the last college football game at UR Stadium (formerly City Stadium). Richmond began playing its games there in 1929.

For the last 25 years the university has been renting the facility from The City for $1.00 a year. In exchange the school maintains the field and buildings. This will be the last year for that deal. So, what will happen to the stadium?

April 27, 1974 flashback: The Cherry Blossom Music Festival was advertised as a “no hassles” event. In the vernacular of the day that meant pot smoking would be ignored by the authorities. However, the policemen at the stadium that day weren’t about to ignore anything. When the cops began pulling pot smokers out of the stands a full-fledged riot ensued.

Richmond made international news when the rock festival at City Stadium exploded into riot with scores of arrests and burning police cars. Click here for a short slideshow.

  1. I was there for the riot. I wish there was more VA history of this sort. How about the mass streak-in at Camptown Races? I was there too. Hundreds of streakers spontaneously streaked around the track in protest and support after police had just arrested a guys for the same thing. It was great! I wish someone would do an story about that.
