At Richmond.com there’s a new piece I wrote about the possibility that we’ll soon see the last of ABC stores. The first of them opened in 1934. Richmond currently has 12; Virginia has 332. If passed by the General Assembly, Senate Bill 443 will turn the retailing of packaged distilled spirits over to private businesses that have purchased a license from the ABC Board.
Asked about the progress of the bill to eliminate ABC stores, McDonnell’s press secretary, Stacey Johnson, said, “The administration is meeting with stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop the most effective approach to ABC privatization.” Attempts to get a more thorough characterization on the matter at hand from the governor’s office were not successful.
