The statue of Confederate general J.E.B. Stuart (1833-64) on Monument Ave. faces north. Is there a particular reason why?

  1. Hint: The statue of Robert E. Lee at the other end of the 1600 block of Monument faces south.

  2. I always liked to think it was because JEB and Jackson were constantly on the look out, protecting the South. While Lee faces south looking out over the place.

    That’s what I heard anyway.

  3. Ross,

Your answer catches the spirit of it. Stuart and Jackson died in the war and face north every day. Lee came home alive, so he faces south.
